The brief involved renovating and converting the existing building and lower arches into retail accommodation.
Part of this strategy was the design of a series of new shopfronts which would not only sit comfortably and compliment the existing heritage asset, but also positively address the new public realm which was being designed around the existing building.
The shopfront strategy was designed with the wider site in mind and extending to all the retail units in the remaining Wharf Road Arches.
The solution was curved metal frames to match the profile of the arches and recessed into the openings to ensure that the historic brick arch structures are more visually dominant than the glazed infill.
As part of the design process and to ensure a coherent approach across the developing and wider Kings Cross Masterplan, a design code was developed alongside the other architects, namely Thomas Heatherwick, Squire and Partners. This included signage and lighting specifically alongside a site wide design approach that would be implemented across all heritage assets in particular.
