The competition brief, organised by The Architects’ Journal called for a landmark pavilion, a welcoming hub of activity within the Clitterhouse Playing Fields, as part of one of Europe’s biggest regeneration projects, Brent Cross Town.
Marjoram Architects’ competition entry proposed a cluster of self-build structures arranged around a new public space and sheltered by a dynamic timber gridshell roof. The Pavilion is designed to be instantly visible and recognisable providing space for new activities and facilities within Clitterhouse Playing Fields.
The mini-pavilions nestle into the landscape in response to the topography. Biodiverse green roof terraces are accessible directly from the park or from within each building, providing a vantage point over the park and the sports pitches.
The sweeping, translucent gridshell roof provides a dramatic counterpoint to the discrete pavilions, acting as shelter and beacon. The public space beneath creates a space to meet, greet and socialise.
The Pavilion has sustainability, net-zero carbon and energy targets at its heart, using rammed earth and timber, while taking a cradle to cradle approach with materials. These simple structures provide the opportunity for local schools and community groups to join the design and construction process, with educational elements within the finished Pavilion
