Crebor Street

31 Crebor Street is a unique development set on a corner plot in East Dulwich. The brief was to replace the existing two storey dwelling with three new purpose built apartments, of which the ground floor flat will be occupied by the current owners of the house who are looking to downsize into more suitable living accommodation.

The corner plot and existing context provides both challenges and opportunities. In response, the concept is derived around an articulated plinth with two vertical townhouses on either side that reflect the scale and vernacular of the immediate context.

The proposed design is a contemporary interpretation of the existing vernacular while being sympathetic in scale to the immediate context.

A key driver for the development is to create a new ground floor apartment for the client that is futureproofed by being both accessible and adaptable.

The upper floor duplex units at either end of the development respond in form and scale to the immediate context, while the overall development represents an architectural approach that looks forward whilst respecting the massing, urban grain and materials of the existing context.

Articulated and textured masonry alongside matching clay tiles which wrap the facade and roof define each townhouse. Vertical timber fins create a contrasting material between the two masonry blocks.

Each entrance is defined by a large square textured brickwork panel which subtly contrasts with the main facade.

The ground floor apartment benefits from a large rear garden which is completely accessible, while the duplex units benefit from external amenity space at first floor above the timber clad plinth. Extending vertically the timber fins create a permeable guarding to the external amenity space.

In this instance an approach of less is more was a conscious decision and to not overdevelop the site in order to create a high quality architectural intervention.
